Illusory Promises

Ballatine's Law Dictionary - "Illusory Promise": A promise whose performance is completely up to the promisor [Ex: a promise by Jones to work for Brown for one year "unless I resign earlier"]. Because the carrying out of such a promise is optional, there is no mutuality and therefore the promise cannot form the basis of a valid contract.
